Home is Where the Heart is

Seven years ago the 30 year blood-shed war between the LTTE and the army forces came to an end exactly two days ago. Currently, the country has been experiencing heavy floods which have led to a multitude of people losing the very same places they call ‘Home’. Every time society is faced with a tremendous strike with the power of what mother nature does to make or break it, we think of the reality that is right in front of our eyes.

All of us, of different ages and races may have very little time to do the things we really want to do in life. To say the things we have to say to people from different walks of life. Our loved ones. Our not so loved ones. We have one life – right here in front of us. Something we take for granted at whatever point in our life. Sad isn't it? What we have today may not be there tomorrow. That is the bitter truth. But, does a catastrophe have to strike for us to come into terms with that?

‘Home', we say, is where the heart it.

That's certainly something I have learnt over the past few months. Despite the level of dysfunctionality of where you grew up, your heart remains there. It will always remain there because that's what has made you who you are today. No other place apart from home will make you feel that way because that is where you belong. You belong in the presence of its dysfunctionality filled with love and hate because it's all a part of you. It will always be part of you, no matter how far you try to run away from it. No matter how harsh the reality of life's catastrophe, you will always be welcome there.

You might walk away to discover the world unseen. You might want to break away from the reality of what a beautifully damaged home provides you but you will eventually realize that is exactly where you belong. The feeling of homeliness there is something irreplaceable because no matter what happened there, they accept you with your flaws and all. The scent of comfort swirls around your room. It may not be the happy family that you witness on TV. But, it's home. The world unseen doesn't amount to what home makes you feel.

When you are discovering different aspects of a world unseen, surrounded by different types of people out of a dream, you realize that home is indeed a beautiful reality. You will miss it every second at every moment, every single day.

Sometimes, the world unseen might not make you feel like you belong.

But, Home will always make you belong.

Because, Home, my dear, is where the heart is.
